If you are like me, you know during the 1960s young people began speaking and writing the phrase βPower to The Peopleβ as a form of rebellion against what they perceived as oppression by the older generation, especially The Establishment. The Black Panthers used the slogan "All Power to the People" to protest the rich, ruling class domination of society, and Pro-democracy students used it to protest American involvement in the Vietnam War. As I sit, looking back through the lens of 2024, I even more so understand what Solomon, then King of Israel meant by Vanity, Vanity, All is Vanity.
Before we deal with PTP, letβs talk CRM. Dating back to the Civil War, on the Cusp of The Emancipation Proclamation, was the birth of The Civil Rights Movement. Spanning the next century, CRM would become a movement that engaged, educated, and empowered the people then known as The Negro.
Before The Johnson Amendment houses of worship served as not just meeting places to inspire the spirit, but a conduit for advancing the black agenda. Sunday Worship Services, Bible Class, and Civic Meetings were common place, so much so, no one thought twice, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, gave his massive, and last civic address at Mason Temple Church of God In Christ.
HERE IN Norfolk. The civil rights movement was thick. Preachers like Milton Reid, of New Calvary Baptist Church, as well Bishop L. E. Willis, used their platform to civically empower the negro.
My point; what if we took the manuscript of the past tweeking to not focus on Power to The People, but The Power and The People. Empower NFK, on May 23, 2024, at 1pm seeks to first educate of what is possible with the hopes of connecting those in power, with regular citizens to create a more beautifully engaging NFK.
I would like to personally thank Reverend Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns, and the people of Second Calvary Baptist Church, who with open arms provided us space for this moment of Empowerment. The church has not asked this, however the expense of opening, and operating such a facility is enormous.
As you may know, houses of faith in particular, budget their events down to the penny, matching it with Tithes and Offerings. The church did not foresee this event, during their recent time of budgeting, yet still opened their doors to us. So if you would find it within yourself, to give whatever you feel to help them cover this added financial obligations.
The East Side of NFK is historically more working class. This prevents a serious challenge when it comes to engaging, and being educated about norfolk affairs. Even Civic Leagues, though a positive resource, also finds itself at the mercy of scheduling, and every life challenges. Part of Empower NFK, is not just getting folks to an event, but taking the news to the people. My goal is to tour each community east of Brambelton Avenue, both to invite people to join in, as well gather their voices to bring back to the powers that be.
If you live anywhere along East Virginia Beach Blvd, itβs a likely chance you will see me, and my friends, walking your hood
